Thursday, January 19, AM. Return to the Windows Updates section in the Settings app and check if a new update is available for your computer. Restart the service and check if that fixes the problem. Type services in the Windows Search bar and select Services. The Software Distribution folder houses the necessary files required to install Windows on your computer. Windows will automatically recreate the folder and re-download the files needed to update your PC.
Additionally, updating your computer may take longer than usual. Paste the command below in the console and press Enter to stop the Windows Update Service. Paste the next command and press Enter. After deleting the Software Distribution files or folder, proceed to the next step to restart the background services you stopped earlier. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and paste the command below in the console to restart the Windows Update Service. Afterward, paste this next command and press Enter to restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Service.
Windows will automatically re-download the files required to update your computer to the latest OS build. Now check if the latest Windows build is available. When you install newer Windows 10 builds, Windows stores the system files of older updates on your device. This lets you uninstall an update or roll back the operating system to a previous version. However, these system files often consume storage space and cause problems with future Windows Updates. Use the Disk Cleanup tool to perform a Windows Update cleanup and try installing the update again.
Type disk cleanup in the Windows Search bar and select Disk Cleanup in the result. Wait for the tool to calculate how much freeable space you have on your PC. I don't use it personally but I think many do. Unfortunately it requires admin privs to run the Install-Module commandlet. This is what I tried first. I have struggled with this as well. I have several ways to download the update but Windows will not install it.
Especially the big updates like 21H2 that just came out. I ended up trying to have the end user hit the Install button but that is not reliable.
I hope someone has a solution that I can't find. How are you triggering these updates? The password would have to change every 45 days - Yeah, did I every say the PCI Council is so far behind best password practices it's not even funny? Windows handles that part of it just like a gMSA.
I'm curious as to why you would want windows update to run when the user logs in and not when they log off instead to reduce downtime?
We do this via GPO. Download and install in one step. For Upgrades like 21H1 etc If you're using an internal update manager like WSUS you can set a deadline for install: if the machine is past that point it will install the updates and prompt for a reboot. If you're just pulling from Microsoft, you may be able to implement something similar through GPO.
To automate it set it up as a scheduled task that runs in the system context anytime there is a logon or startup event on your laptop. Then you don't need to input any credentials. I use it all the time and it has always worked for me. I also have it write a log so I can see what it did. Because I expect they will do a shutdown so they put the machine back in the drawer until they need to run their next credit card.
